After the federal election: Merz does not rule out new special fund for the Bundeswehr

The Union's candidate for chancellor believes that a quick decision would be difficult, but talks are taking place. The CDU leader, however, rejects a quick reform of the debt brake. The SPD wants its members to vote on a possible coalition agreement.
The debate about the future financing of the Bundeswehr is gaining momentum. CDU leader Friedrich Merz said of a new special fund for defense: "We are talking to each other, but it is far too early to say anything about it now. I see it as difficult at the moment, but as I said, there are discussions." The First Parliamentary Secretary of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Thorsten Frei, had previously expressed similar views. On Deutschlandfunk, he hinted that a new special fund could be set up. He did not want to rule out that, in view of the highly dynamic changes in foreign policy and the increasing threat situation, "decisions specifically in the area of foreign and security policy will be necessary very quickly," said Frei.
