Friedrich Merz: Meeting with Macron in Paris

Paris/Berlin. CDU/CSU candidate for chancellor Friedrich Merz wants to meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris this evening after his victory in the federal election. Both have agreed to meet for political talks, the magazines "Politico" and "Bild" reported.
When asked, a CDU spokeswoman in Berlin would neither confirm nor deny the report. During Merz's first trip abroad after the election, European defense is likely to be discussed at a dinner in light of the US change of course in Ukraine policy.

Macron informed the other heads of state and government of the EU countries in a video conference this morning about his recent talks with US President Donald Trump. Nothing was initially disclosed about the content.
The exchange also took place against the backdrop of the special EU summit on March 6, which was intended to take decisions on further support for Ukraine and strengthening European defence.
Trump wants to force Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin into negotiations to end the war and give the Europeans responsibility for securing a possible peace "deal".
On Monday, Macron was the first European head of state to be received by Trump in his second term in office at the White House. During the talks, the Frenchman insisted, among other things, that Europeans, who were left out of the recent talks between American and Russian representatives, be more involved in the negotiations.
