Gun violence in the USA: Apparently at least five dead in shooting in New York

A man entered a Manhattan high-rise with a rifle. According to US media, he killed several people – and presumably himself.
According to US media reports, at least five people were killed by gunfire in New York, including a police officer and the suspected shooter. "Four people, including a New York City Police Department officer, were killed in today's shooting in Manhattan," CNN reported, citing police sources. The suspected shooter is believed to have died of a "self-inflicted wound," it added.
Mayor Eric Adams and the New York Police Department also confirmed the suspect's death. The sole shooter was "neutralized," NYPD Chief Jessica Tisch wrote on the X platform. The motive for the crime was initially unclear.
The incident occurred in a high-rise building that houses offices of the investment firm Blackstone and the National Football League, among others. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on X that the FBI is assisting with the investigation.
Over the center of Manhattan, where the incident occurred, several police and TV helicopters circled that New York evening. The streets surrounding the Midtown Manhattan skyscraper were lined with emergency vehicles with flashing blue lights.
Firearms are readily available and circulate in large numbers in the United States. Following violent incidents—for example, in schools, supermarkets, nightclubs, or public events—there are often heated debates about stricter gun laws. However, tangible progress has so far been lacking. Comprehensive reform has stalled for years due to resistance from Republicans and the powerful gun lobby.
