Retail sales lower in April
Compared to the same month of April 2024, according to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), sales grew by 2.3 percent in real terms and by 3.4 percent in nominal terms. In March 2025, compared to February 2025, retail sales recorded a real increase of 0.9 percent (preliminary figure: -0.2 percent) and a nominal increase of 0.9 percent (preliminary figure: -0.1 percent) after revision of the preliminary figures.
In April 2025, sales in the food retail sector fell by 0.1 percent in real terms, adjusted for calendar and seasonally effects, and rose by 0.1 percent in nominal terms compared to the previous month. Compared to April 2024, sales increased by 2.3 percent in real terms and 4.9 percent in nominal terms.
Calendar and seasonally adjusted sales in the non-food retail trade fell by 1.3 percent in real terms and by 1.4 percent in nominal terms in April 2025 compared to the previous month.
Compared to the same month last year, April 2024, sales grew by 2.6 percent in real terms and by 2.9 percent in nominal terms. In e-commerce and mail order, sales in April 2025 recorded a decline of 0.2 percent in real terms and 0.4 percent in nominal terms compared to the previous month, whereas sales grew by 14.1 percent in real terms and 13.8 percent in nominal terms compared to the same month of the previous year, April 2024, according to statisticians.
