Long-distance duel with Inter Milan: SSC Napoli crowned Italian champions for the fourth time

With a home win on the final matchday, Napoli secured the Serie A title, relegating Inter Milan to second place in the long-distance clash. For Napoli, it was their second championship in three years.
SSC Napoli are once again Italian football champions. On the final matchday of Serie A, coach Antonio Conte's team beat Cagliari Calcio 2-0 (1-0) at their home stadium, the Diego Maradona Stadium, thus defending their lead in the table. Closest rivals Inter Milan failed to capitalize on a 2-0 (1-0) win at AC Como at the same time. Coach Simone Inzaghi's Champions League finalist finished second, one point behind. All other matches on the final matchday will take place on Saturday and Sunday.
Scott McTominay with a scissor-kick (42nd minute) and Romelu Lukaku (51st) shot Napoli to the fourth league title in the club's history after 1987, 1990 with Maradona and 2023. Coach Conte had to celebrate the title win in the stands after being sent off on the previous matchday.
Curiously, his Milan colleague Inzaghi also did not see the goals from Stefan de Vrij (20th) and Joaquin Correa (51st) as well as the sending off of Como's Jose Manuel Reina (45th) from the sidelines because he had also been shown a red card on the previous matchday.
If both top teams had finished with the same number of points, the decision would only have been made on Monday in a knockout duel – just five days before the Champions League final.
