Red numbers: Manchester United wants to cut 200 jobs

Premier League club Manchester United wants to cut up to 200 jobs and reduce the size of its London office in order to be able to report profits again after five years of losses. The traditional club wants to continue its austerity measures. Last year, the club already laid off 250 of its former 1,150 employees. In addition to cuts in employee benefits, the free lunch at Old Trafford stadium will also be eliminated in the future. This will save the club one million pounds a year.
"We have lost money for the last five years in a row," said Omar Berrada, Manchester United's chief executive. "This cannot continue. Our two main priorities as a club are success on the pitch for our fans and improving our facilities. We cannot invest in these goals if we are constantly losing money."
Even after the takeover by billionaire Jim Ratcliffe in 2023, who is investing around 1.5 billion dollars for about a third of the shares, things are not looking up for the English record champions. The club has been in the red for five years. The club is currently in 15th place in the Premier League and is playing its worst season since the 1980s.
