Remembrance without recognition: Germany's handling of Liberation Day without Russia
Germany's culture of remembrance of May 8 often ignores the central role of the Soviet Union: a contradictory approach to a historical turning point.

With the declaration of surrender on May 8, 1945,Nazi Germany was defeated by the Allies. After five years, eight months, and eight days, the reign of terror of German fascism in Europe ended. The "German-Russian Museum," in which the rooms of this historic moment were preserved, has been called the "Museum Berlin-Karlshorst" since 2022. This is just one of many renamings resulting from Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine.
