At the European Championship: German U19 squanders 5-1 lead against England

A bitter blow for the German U19 national team at the European Championships in Romania: The DFB team leads against England 5-1 - and still does not win the game.

What a drama for the German Under-19s: After the 3-0 defeat in the opening match of the European Championship against the Netherlands, Germany could only manage a 5-5 draw in their second match. In the spectacle in Bucharest, coach Hanno Balitsch's team had already led 5-1, but squandered the advantage within just 11 minutes.

Barcelona's Noah Darvich gave Germany the lead in the 7th minute. Goals from Said El-Mala (Cologne, 31st minute), Josh King (Fulham, 35th minute), Max Moerstedt (Hoffenheim, 42nd minute), and Leopold Wurm (Regensburg, 44th minute) gave Germany a 4-1 lead at halftime. The impressive El-Mala extended it to 5-1 immediately after the break.

But after Wheatley's goal to make it 2-5 in the 52nd minute, Germany collapsed. Three more goals followed by the 63rd minute. In the end, England was much closer to victory than the German national team, but the latter salvaged the point.

Now they absolutely need a win in their final group match against Norway (Friday, 7 p.m.) to advance. Furthermore, England cannot win their final game against the already qualified group winners, the Netherlands.
