Athletics: Javelin thrower Weber wins with 91 meters

Javelin thrower Julian Weber caused a surprise in the World Championship year. The sixth-place finisher at the Paris Olympics became only the seventh German athlete to break the 90-meter barrier at the Diamond League in Doha. With a throw of 91.06 meters, Weber, who had already thrown javelins of 89.84 and 89.06 meters in previous attempts, overtook the 2021 Olympic champion, Neeraj Chopra of India (90.23 meters), in the final round of a high-class competition. He secured the victory with a world-best performance of the year.
Weber's previous career best, from 2022, was 89.54 meters. The 2022 European champion is aiming to finally win his first medal at the world level at the World Championships in Tokyo in September. The second German javelin thrower, Max Dehning from Offenburg, who surpassed the 90-meter mark last year, reached a disappointing 74.00 meters on Friday. In the discus, World Championship eighth-place finisher Henrik Janssen (Magdeburg/65.79) and Olympic sixth-place finisher Clemens Prüfer (Potsdam/62.18) finished only fourth and eighth, respectively.
Meanwhile, Tia Clayton made a statement in the duel between Jamaican sprinters. The 20-year-old won the 100m race in a world-best time of 10.92 seconds, beating her twin sister Tina and Britain's Amy Hunt. Two-time Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, 38, finished fourth in her first Diamond League start in three years with a time of 11.05 seconds.
