Kompany: "This will always be something special for Bayern"

Vincent Kompany underscored the importance of the first title of the season for FC Bayern after the victory in Stuttgart. The coach also praised new signing Luis Diaz, who surprised Leon Goretzka with his goal. With Manuel Neuer delivering another strong performance, the goalkeeper's workroom is getting a new addition.

Last year, the Supercup was held without FC Bayern for the first time since 2011. In 2025, the Munich team returned as reigning champions and were eager for their eleventh triumph, in part because the competition was named after their club icon Franz Beckenbauer this season. After the 2-1 win at cup winners Stuttgart, Vincent Kompany emphasized the special nature of this success on the Sky microphone: "Perhaps it was even more important, it's the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. It will always be something special for Bayern."
Given the short preparation time, the Belgian was very pleased with his team's performance: "Today is a first and a good step."
Kompany sympathizes with JaquezHarry Kane , in a way, took the first step, as the Englishman capitalized on a botched clearance by Stuttgart defender Luca Jaquez. Kompany, given his playing background, could empathize with the Stuttgart player: "I've been a defender my entire career, and it's obviously frustrating when the ball falls into the right spot for the striker, but he also works hard for it."
The Englishman took full advantage and scored while falling to take the lead. "That's why we have Harry, he just does those things. Half-lying, outside the box, not many do that," praised Leon Goretzka . Goretzka was also impressed by the second Bavarian goalscorer, especially because Luis Diaz shone with a new skill: "I'm also a bit surprised that he's so good with his head. I could have learned a thing or two from that in the first half." Shortly before Kane's goal, Goretzka had missed two chances, and then another in the 34th minute, this time with a header.
But the 28-year-old new signing from Liverpool wasn't just impressive because of his finishing skills. "His energy is also contagious for the team," said Kompany, describing Luis Diaz's influence on Munich's game.

The fact that two goals were ultimately enough to secure the win was also thanks to Manuel Neuer . The 39-year-old goalkeeper made two strong saves in the first half, stopping Josha Vagnoman and Nick Woltemade with the score at 1-0, and in the 75th minute—just before the 2-0 lead—he showed a world-class reflex save to deny a deflected shot from Jamie Leweling.
Neuer, however, didn't want to focus on his personal performance on Sat.1 , but rather emphasized the importance of a successful start to the season after a successful preseason with three wins from three matches: "I think it was important for us to continue like this. We won all of our preseason games and were always the better team, including today. We want to take that into the league."
Neuer was also allowed to take home the "Man of the Match" trophy. He had already chosen a place for it: "It's going in my study, just like the other trophies, medals, cups, and certificates. I already have a small collection."
