Women's European Football Championship: Berlin not included in the 2029 bid

A possible 2029 Women's European Football Championship in Germany would take place without any matches in the capital, Berlin. This was the result of a decision by the DFB Executive Committee, which the association published. Accordingly, the German Football Association (DFB) is submitting Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, and Wolfsburg as candidate cities for the bid. Berlin, Gelsenkirchen, and Rostock were rejected. In its decision, the Executive Committee followed the recommendation of a panel of experts. "This gives us momentum and confidence for the international bid process. With regard to the host cities, we can also say: We are ready to host another major football festival in Germany in 2029," said President Bernd Neuendorf, referring to the eight host cities.
The decision on the 2029 host city will be made in December of this year. Neuendorf praised the commitment of the German bidders. Hamburg, Bremen, and Essen were eliminated in a process before Berlin, Gelsenkirchen, and Rostock. The Women's European Championships were already held in Germany in 1989 and 2001. This time, the DFB faces several rivals. Denmark and Sweden as a duo, as well as Poland, Portugal, and Italy as individual bidders, are also vying for the tournament. In the 2027 World Cup, Germany, along with Belgium and the Netherlands, lost out to Brazil.
