The award is not intended as a competition for the most spectacular production, but rather as recognition of places that celebrate Christmas authentically, communally, and creatively. Three cities were again eligible to apply for the titles of "European Christmas Capital" (cities with over 100,000 inhabitants), "European Christmas City" (cities with populations between 10,000 and 100,000), and "European Christmas Village" (cities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants) in 2025.

There's also the Treasure Trove of Gifts market, which focuses on handmade products and live music. Other attractions include the medieval-inspired Christmas activities at Celje Castle and the city's extraordinary light installations, which combine history and festive spirit.

Noja is a small town on Spain's Atlantic coast, just 80 kilometers northwest of Bilbao. During Advent, the small town transforms into an atmospheric Christmas village, which, according to the jury, is characterized by communal celebrations. When the lights in the alleys are switched on in the evening, the salty Atlantic air mingles with the aroma of regional specialties such as sobaos and quesadas.
