Europe's most beautiful Christmas cities 2025: Three spectacular destinations for Advent and winter

Many European cities shine in festive splendor during the Advent and Christmas season, and in many places, wonderful Christmas markets enchant visitors. Travelers are spoiled for choice: Which city should they visit before or during Christmas this year?
The current ranking by the Christmas Cities Network organization can help – it annually honors European cities, for example, as "European Christmas Capital," "European Christmas City," and "European Christmas Village" for particularly exceptional Christmas-themed traditions and efforts. We'll now reveal which three cities received the titles for 2025. Spoiler alert: Unfortunately, a city in Germany isn't among them.
Cities and municipalities apply annually for the title to the Christmas Cities Network, which is supported by the European Parliament. After registration and submission of documents for a special "Christmas project," an international jury evaluates the applications. According to the network, particular consideration is given to the cultural significance of the Christmas program, the involvement of the local community, the preservation of traditions, and the European spirit. A harmonious overall experience during the Advent season also plays a role in the decision.

The award is not intended as a competition for the most spectacular production, but rather as recognition of places that celebrate Christmas authentically, communally, and creatively. Three cities were again eligible to apply for the titles of "European Christmas Capital" (cities with over 100,000 inhabitants), "European Christmas City" (cities with populations between 10,000 and 100,000), and "European Christmas Village" (cities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants) in 2025.
In 2024, Brno inthe Czech Republic was the "European Christmas Capital" and Waterford in Ireland was the "European Christmas City." This year's winning cities are:

This year, Vilnius , the capital of Lithuania , holds the title of "European Christmas Capital ." The city has become one of Europe's most famous Christmas destinations in recent years. The Christmas tree in Cathedral Square is the centerpiece of the festivities. All around, the UNESCO-protected Old Town is transformed into a winter sea of lights with illuminated cobblestone streets, Christmas markets, cultural events, and a festive atmosphere that combines traditional elements with new ideas.
The jury also praised the sustainable lighting and eco-friendly decorations. Ice skating rinks, the Christmas Town, and themed city tours also helped the city achieve top marks, including a "Christmas Train" that takes visitors through the wintry Old Town. Culinary delights include a plate of kugelis (a Lithuanian potato dish) and a warming mug of mulled wine.

Celje, located in the heart of Slovenia , has been staging its famous Christmas fairytale during Advent for 25 years, earning it the title of "European Christmas City 2025." Among the city's Christmas highlights, the jury cites "Fairytale Land," where storytelling, artistic installations, and themed decorations transform the old town into a magical stage.
There's also the Treasure Trove of Gifts market, which focuses on handmade products and live music. Other attractions include the medieval-inspired Christmas activities at Celje Castle and the city's extraordinary light installations, which combine history and festive spirit.
Noja is a small town on Spain's Atlantic coast, just 80 kilometers northwest of Bilbao. During Advent, the small town transforms into an atmospheric Christmas village, which, according to the jury, is characterized by communal celebrations. When the lights in the alleys are switched on in the evening, the salty Atlantic air mingles with the aroma of regional specialties such as sobaos and quesadas.
Other highlights include the "House of Christmas," with a family-friendly program including workshops and performances. The Christmas markets, meanwhile, feature local crafts alongside a variety of regional delicacies. The jury also recommends a stroll through the tranquil landscapes of the Santoña Marshes.
