The Núñez-based club has lost eight of its last ten matches and was eliminated from the Copa Libertadores by Palmeiras and from the Copa Argentina after losing on penalties to Independiente de Mendoza . Manager Marcelo Gallardo continues to struggle, unable to get his elite squad to function effectively. His team is currently sixth in Group B , and their qualification for the top continental tournament is in jeopardy if they suffer a defeat against Claudio Úbeda's side.
The referee appointed to officiate the match is Nicolás Ramírez , the newly appointed official who refereed the Copa Argentina final. He will be in charge of the game for the third consecutive time. He officiated the 2-1 victory at the Estadio Monumental last season and also the 1-0 win at La Bombonera . That means he has two wins in River Plate's favor. Héctor Paleta will be in charge of VAR, also for the third consecutive time.
