"Freedom of the press is not negotiable": Olivier Faure denounces LFI's refusal to accredit a journalist from Le Monde to its summer universities

Jean-Luc Mélenchon's movement has refused to accredit Olivier Pérou, a journalist from Le Monde and co-author of the investigative book "La Meute," which is highly critical of the party's operations, for its summer universities, which are being held this weekend in the Drôme region.

The first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, said on Friday that "freedom of the press is not negotiable" , after a journalist from Le Monde was refused access to the summer universities of La France Insoumise (LFI).

"We don't fight fascists by rolling back democracy," he added in a message posted on X. "A book, an article, an editorial, a media outlet can be contested. But denying access to a journalist is unprecedented for a left-wing party and it is simply unacceptable," he continued.

This refusal of accreditation sparked a protest from the newspaper Le Monde , colleagues from other media outlets present at these summer universities, and around thirty journalists' societies from several other media outlets, who saw it as "a warning shot for our entire profession" .

LFI, for its part, justified its decision by accusing Olivier Pérou of having "heavily defamed" it in his book, co-written with Libération journalist Charlotte Belaïch, and of having "invented false information" about its internal life.
