This Friday, May 23, the Dordogne prefecture announced that the complete culling of a herd affected by bovine tuberculosis was underway in Eyzerac. The operation was being carried out by the veterinary services of the Dordogne Departmental Directorate for Employment, Labor, Solidarity, and Population Protection (DDETSPP), assisted by the gendarmerie, with the authorization of the liberty and detention judge.

This slaughter responds to a measure ordered (on April 24) by the liberty and detention judge, in the face of the lack of cooperation of the breeder, two of whose cattle tested positive for infection in 2024. "Everything was done by the State services and the actors of the agricultural world to support him in the implementation of the obligation of total slaughter, but he unfortunately did not seize these opportunities, endangering public and animal health", inform the prefecture services.

State responsibility

"Bovine tuberculosis remains a major zoonosis, and it is the State's responsibility to prevent its spread by all means at its disposal. The total culling of this herd is a necessary measure to protect public and animal health," the prefecture further emphasizes. As a reminder, bovine tuberculosis is a "serious disease, transmissible to humans, and represents a major risk for neighboring herds, wildlife, and people in contact with infected cattle."
