Two people were killed and five injured when a bridge collapsed at a highway construction site south of Seoul on Tuesday, South Korean authorities said. The accident killed two people, while four people were seriously injured and one suffered a minor injury, the National Fire Agency said in a statement. Authorities are searching for three others buried under the debris. The injured have been hospitalized, an Interior Ministry official told AFP.
Local media broadcast dramatic footage of what appeared to be a section of the bridge collapsing, sending a huge cloud of smoke into the air. The incident occurred around 9:50 a.m. local time in Anseong, about 65 kilometers south of Seoul. According to data from South Korea's labor ministry, more than 8,000 work-related deaths occurred in the country between 2020 and 2023.
