North American box office: K-pop sensation Demon Hunters captivates theaters

The three Korean pop stars who fight demons with their catchy music take the top spot from Zach Cregger's thriller, Vanished. Freaky Friday 2 completes the podium .

A Netflix phenomenon, the KPop anime Demon Hunters took the top spot at the North American box office this weekend, grossing $18 million, according to estimates Sunday by specialist firm Exhibitor Relations. Netflix does not release box office figures for its films, so this figure is based on projections from competing studios and theater operators. The KPop musical comedy Demon Hunters tells the story of a trio of young Korean pop stars who fight demons with catchy songs and synchronized choreography. Since its release on Netflix in June, it has become the most-watched animated film in the streaming platform's history. In theaters in five countries this weekend, thousands of fans participated in sold-out "karaoke screenings." " This weekend, a streaming production designed for home viewing has a level of popularity rarely achieved by major blockbusters ," observed analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.

The horror film Vanishing , which has been at the top of the box office for the past two weeks, has grossed $15.6 million, according to projections from the specialist firm. The thriller, directed by Zach Cregger and starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin , depicts the mysterious disappearance of a dozen schoolchildren in the middle of the night. It is followed by the second installment of the famous comedy Freaky Friday , with $9.2 million in revenue. Entitled Being My Mother Again , it portrays, 20 years later, the Coleman family played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan.
