Housing crisis: Asloca is overwhelmed by requests

The Vaud tenants' association says it saw a 40% increase in cases last year.

Asloca Vaud notes that the housing crisis is increasing conflicts between tenants and landlords (illustrative image).
Asloca Vaud recorded 28,942 consultations last year, it announced on Tuesday. This represents "a historic increase in activity compared to previous years." Requests are up 40% compared to the previous year and nearly 150% higher than in 2022.
"This surge in the number of applications reflects an alarming worsening of housing conditions throughout the canton," writes the tenants' rights association. According to the association, the housing shortage will have worsened further in 2024. As a result, tenants are simultaneously facing soaring rents, a scarcity of affordable housing, and a rise in tenancy disputes, which explains the growing demand for Asloca's services.
The organization highlights one phenomenon in particular: retirees whose leases are terminated "under false pretenses, but with a common goal: to re-let their homes, for double or even triple the rent." Asloca Vaud calls on the Council of State and municipalities to act immediately to stem this crisis. "Defending tenants today requires strong, courageous, and concrete measures," it concludes.
