Marmagne. Work to repair a road bridge built in the 18th century

If you've been driving between Montbard and Venarey-Les Laumes this summer, you've probably noticed. Work began on July 7th on the bridge over D905, which crosses the Fontenay stream in the commune of Marmagne. If all goes well, the work will be completed on September 20th.
"This 14.20 meter long bridge, built in the 18th century, is not waterproof, which causes problems with water infiltration in the vault. It is also equipped with very old retaining devices," explains François Sauvadet, president of the Côte-d'Or Department. It should be noted that the maintenance of bridges and retaining walls, located along the departmental roads of Côte-d'Or, falls under the jurisdiction of the Department .
The objective of this work in Marmagne is, "on the one hand, to repair the structure by creating a waterproofing system," continues the President of the Department. "On the other hand, it is planned to replace the old barriers with new metal guardrails. Bordered sidewalks will also be created to protect pedestrians, before the implementation of a new wearing course on the road."
This work, carried out under alternating traffic, is being carried out by the Côte-d'Or company Gaudry BTP , located in Ruffey-lès-Échirey, for a total of €268,164. The cost is being financed by the departmental council with a contribution from the municipality of €31,075 for pedestrian safety, itself subsidised by the Department.

To allow for the creation of sidewalks on the bridge, the width of the road will be narrowed from approximately 8.40 to 7.50 m. Photo NB
"To allow for the creation of sidewalks on the bridge, the width of the road will be narrowed [from approximately 8.40 to 7.50 m]. This was a wish of the municipality to make the crossing safer for pedestrians and people with reduced mobility. This will also create a more aesthetically pleasing entrance to the village," adds Marcel Drappier, Mayor of Marmagne.

It was necessary to obtain the approval of the architect of buildings of France
For this restoration project of the Marmagne bridge, the architect of the buildings of France (ABF) was consulted because of its proximity to the Saint-Léonard church, listed as a historic monument since 1947. This religious building, whose exterior has just been restored , is located on the path to the Fontenay Abbey. Stones present in the area around the bridge come, in particular, from the Semond quarry, in the Châtillonnais region .
