Tariffs: Trump announces new 100% tariffs on chips and semiconductors

The American president has not yet specified the date of entry into force of this new customs tax.
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he plans to impose 100% tariffs on "chips and semiconductors" , without specifying, for the moment, the date of entry into force of this new customs tax.
"We're going to put significant tariffs on chips and semiconductors," he said from the White House, "around 100%. But that's good news for the companies that make them in the United States."
Skip the adChips have long been in the sights of Donald Trump, who has accused Taiwan of having "stealed" the American semiconductor industry . "If you have committed to manufacturing or are in the process of manufacturing, you will not pay anything," he said Wednesday from the White House.
The US president's threats, however, shook technology stocks on Asian stock markets. In Seoul, South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix was down 0.4% around 2:30 a.m. GMT after having dropped nearly 3%. In Japan, Tokyo Electron, a major chip production equipment maker, fell 3.22%, while semiconductor maker Renesas lost 3.44%.
On the other hand, the Taiwanese giant TSMC, which produces most of the most sophisticated semiconductors, soared by almost 5% after Taipei assured it would be spared.
Since it is “Taiwan’s largest exporter, and it has factories in the United States, TSMC is exempt,” said Liu Chin-ching, director of Taiwan’s National Development Council. The stakes are high: Taiwan exported $7.4 billion of semiconductors to the United States in 2024.
Keen to appease Washington, TSMC - whose chips are essential to Apple's iPhones and Nvidia's cutting-edge artificial intelligence equipment - announced in early March that it would invest $100 billion in the United States to build factories there.
