What Trump Isn't Saying About Tariffs

The White House tenant is touting the merits of his trade policy and the tariffs that come into effect this Thursday, August 7. At the same time, he's trying to cover up the drawbacks it brings to Americans, starting with rising prices and a slowing economy, this Guardian columnist points out. But reality weighs more heavily than rhetoric.
With Donald Trump, actions rarely follow words. But upon closer inspection, what the president doesn't say is just as revealing as his shocking statements.
“From day one, we will end inflation and restore America's purchasing power by lowering the prices of every product,” he promised during his campaign. A few months later, he assured that April 2 would go down in history as “the day American manufacturing was reborn”… only to suspend his tariff reform a week later.
He also promised peace in Ukraine upon his inauguration, before explaining that it was just a "joke" . He also boasts of finding few opponents worthy of him in golf, something which images of his recent trip to Scotland cast doubt on.
As a true real estate mogul, reality TV star, and campaign pet, Donald Trump has learned to present things as they suit him, even if it means straying from the facts. In the White House, this often translates into a chasm between his words and his actions. It's generally better to trust the actions of his government rather than his endless spiel.
