By Le ParisienA second win in a row for the Bleues! And a historic 199th selection for Eugénie Le Sommer. The French women's football team won this Tuesday, February 25 against Iceland (3-2) in Le Mans, and flies to the top of Group A2 of the League of Nations and saw its star striker become the sole holder of the selection record .
The evening was not perfect for Laurent Bonadei's players who were beaten twice on set pieces, but they showed a much better face than against Norway on Friday evening. From the start of the match, the Blues were on the attack, putting in place a fairly high pressure which allowed Sakina Karchaoui to quickly attempt a first shot (2nd), on target but caught by the opposing goalkeeper.
The solution finally came from Kadidiatou Diani (23rd). Positioned at the reception of a blocked shot from Grace Geyoro, the former Parisian was able to control and then curl her shot from the inside of her left foot to aim for the opposite top corner (1-0). 4 minutes later, at the end of a sublime collective action and a daring backheel from Sakina Karchaoui, the French doubled the lead thanks to Marie-Antoinette Katoto (2-0, 27th). We then thought the break was made but the Icelanders, through Vilhjalmsdottir on a free kick, came closer to the score ten minutes later.
"We got a wake-up call with the goal we conceded," Laurent Bonadei observed on W9 after 45 minutes of play. "We mustn't get carried away. We scored a nice goal but we're going to have to be very vigilant."
The Bleues were vigilant in the second half and multiplied their attacks, well guided by Sakina Karchaoui in midfield. Diani thought she had doubled the lead in the 61st minute, but her curling shot from the left ended up hitting the crossbar. It was finally Sandy Baltimore who allowed the French team to definitively take the lead in the 65th, with a solid cross shot from the left. The goal from a corner by Sigurdardottir (68th) will remain without consequence for the Bleues.
"It's nice, 6 points in two games is an ideal start," savored Laurent Bonadei. (...) We know that it's never easy to win twice in a row at home. All the games are going to be tight. I found that the girls showed confidence and a very good state of mind, that's what's important." Coming on in the 79th minute, Eugénie Le Sommer was able to take advantage and savor her 199th selection. "When I heard the crowd's ovation, it warmed my heart," she admitted to W9, just after being carried in triumph by her teammates. "We have a nice group, we can go far together. The girls were happy for me too and I thank them."
