Honda Civic Hybrid E: HEV, the same for less

It's rare enough to warrant mentioning. Released in 2022, the Civic sees its price drop by €850 and its standard equipment enhanced. With a subtly revised finish, including a black headliner and chrome inserts, the Japanese manufacturer's compact hatchback gains new interior lighting, a heated steering wheel, and a higher-quality 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. The Executive version adds an inductive charging pad on the center console. A slightly revised design for the grille, front bumper, and headlights completes the package of improvements. This facelift also brings back the Civic's main strength: its hybrid technology. This system, whose merits we have already had the opportunity to praise, is based on the combination of a 184 hp electric motor and a 143 hp 2-liter 4-cylinder engine with direct gasoline injection and Atkinson cycle, which powers a generator to produce electricity for the 1.05 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery recharges during braking and powers the electric traction motor during acceleration.

In practice, the Civic behaves like an electric car. Below 65 km/h, the Civic is mostly silent. Between 65 km/h and 140 km/h, at a steady speed, the combustion engine takes over and directly drives the front wheels via a clutch. The electric motor then takes over for overtaking, assisted by the four-cylinder engine. Despite the absence of a gearbox, the system simulates gear changes, enhancing the driving experience. As a result, this dynamic sedan rarely consumes more than 5.5 liters per 100 km. It's hard to do better.
