Samarate - The Lombardy Engineers based in Samarate lay a bridge to reopen a road in the Biella area - Gallarate/Malpensa - Varese News

It took the entire “long weekend” of June 2nd for the specialized unit of the Lombardy Army Genieri to “launch” – as they say in technical jargon – the temporary bridge over the Oremo torrent , in the Biella area (all photos: Lombardy Genieri).
The temporary work is being built between Biella and Pollone, along the Provincial Road 502 “Sordevolo-Biella” , and will remain in service for 6-8 months, the time needed to complete the renovation work on the main bridge: during this period cars, motorbikes and cyclists will travel on a “bypass” nearby, which includes crossing the stream.
The Genieri Lombardia group uses Bailey bridges , of military origin, which are ideal for temporary interventions: they are gigantic “Meccanos”, made of beams assembled partly in the base camps, partly directly on site. They are assembled, remain in service for a few months (or a few years) and then dismantled: the various components are taken to the Genieri Lombardia warehouse, which is based in Samarate, near Malpensa, but whose ranks include volunteers from other ProCiv groups and who have acquired specific skills .

Returning to the intervention, the assembly work began on the morning of Saturday 31 May : using metal beams, the structure was built, approximately 27 metres long, spanning the Oremo torrent (on Saturday afternoon, the President of the Province, Emanuele Ramella Pralungo, also arrived for a visit).

After two days of work on the Oremo torrent gorge – which with its rushing waters during floods creates many inconveniences – the bridge was ready on Sunday morning . The crane brought by the Province then launched the work at midday on Tuesday 3 June , in the presence of some engineers led by Juri Valter De Tomasi. In total, seventeen volunteers were involved in the intervention.
