Igp brand to defend Burano lace

A logo that represents the Association “Il Merletto di Burano”, to which several local manufacturing companies belong, and that will distinguish all original products accompanied by a guarantee certificate that protects and promotes an all-Venetian excellence.
Burano Lace PGI is coming: a protection for a story that represents a centuries-old art made of passion, tradition and dedication, which spread widely in 16th-century Venice and which, over the years, acquired international fame.
The idea for the brand comes from Massimiliano Zane, master craftsman and president of the Association “Il Merletto di Burano”, and Sebastiano Costalonga, Councilor for Trade and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Venice, and aims to combat the sale of non-original products on the island of Burano.
Precisely with the aim of keeping the ancient tradition alive, in 2021, the Department of Trade and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Venice announced that it had sent its contribution to the European Commission for the creation of a mechanism that would lead to the recognition of a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) brand.

Since then the work has continued: together with the logo, a real Specification has been developed, aimed at defining the production and commercial characteristics of the product, and a technical commission has been identified, composed of four master lace makers, to organize and manage quality control.
