Markets rise on optimism over tariffs and war in Ukraine

Piazza Affari started off in great shape, like other European stock markets, due to optimism over tariffs between the US and China and the war in Ukraine.

Frankfurt gains 1.1% at the start, London 0.86%, Paris 0.73%.

In Milan Iveco (+5.7%) is running in the wake of the plan, followed by Stm (+5.47%) and Stellantis (+4.88%). Unicredit (+4.24%) stands out from the podium after its above-expected figures, with confidence in being able to increase its 2025 guidance. The bank has not yet decided on its offer for Banco Bpm (+2.94%). On the opposite front, Leonardo is slipping (-3.4%).

Markets Week, Eyes on US Inflation and Eurozone GDP

US inflation and Eurozone GDP will be the main events of the next week on the Western markets. After the first round of talks on tariffs between the US and China in Geneva (Switzerland), the US price index dominates the scene, expected on Tuesday 13 May. Bloomberg analysts expect a stable figure, but surprises due to the effects of the trade war started by Donald Trump last February are not excluded. Then on Thursday 15th are the GDP of the United Kingdom and the Eurozone, which also releases industrial production and employment data. The week closes on Friday 16th with the GDP of Japan and Italian inflation . Finally, the quarterly earnings season is coming to an end. Unicredit releases it on Monday 12th , followed on Thursday 15th by Interpump, Unipol and Iveco , to close on Friday with Terna . Below are the main macroeconomic events of the week between Monday 12th and Friday 16th May . There are no significant macroeconomic events on the calendar for Monday 12th May . However, Unicredit releases its quarterly results, which effectively starts the final phase of the first season of interim accounts. The Zew index from Germany is scheduled for Tuesday 13 , followed in the afternoon by US inflation. The Bayer and Munich Re quarterly results are expected in Germany. The second reading of April inflation in Germany opens the day on Wednesday 14. Weekly crude oil inventories in the US follow in the afternoon. Hera's quarterly results are expected. Thursday 15 is the day of the UK's GDP, released early in the morning, a few hours before that of the Eurozone, which also releases data on industrial production and employment. From the US, the New York State manufacturing index, retail sales, requests for benefits, the Philadelphia Fed index and industrial production in April are coming, followed by a speech by Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. The Interpump, Unipol and Iveco quarterly results are on the agenda. The Japanese GDP opens the day on Friday 16 . Inflation follows in Italy and from the US new construction, building permits and confidence from the University of Michigan. Terna's quarterly report is expected.
