Dengue, 60 cases in Italy in the first 5 months of 2025: all linked to trips abroad

From January 1 to May 31, 2025, the national surveillance system coordinated by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità has recorded 60 confirmed cases of Dengue : all are associated with travel abroad , median age of 41, 53% male and no related deaths.
There are 13 confirmed cases of Chikungunya (all associated with foreign travel, median age 50, 54% male, no deaths), 4 cases of Zikavirus (all imported, no deaths), 5 cases of Tbe-tick-borne meningoencephalitis (all autochthonous, no deaths) and 1 case of Toscana virus (no deaths). This is revealed by the first seasonal update of the dashboard on arbovirosis published today.
The summer and hot season is in fact generally the one most at risk for arbovirosis - diseases caused by viruses transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks, such as Dengue, Chikungunya and West Nile - due to the greater activity of vectors, such as mosquitoes.
For the time being, explains the ISS, the main preventive tool against the spread of arboviruses is reducing exposure to vectors during the period favorable to transmission. As for mosquitoes, it is advisable to protect yourself from bites and prevent them from easily reproducing by using repellents and wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts when you are outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk; using mosquito nets on windows and staying in air-conditioned environments; frequently emptying containers with stagnant water (for example, buckets, flower pots and saucers) and covering those that are not removable; frequently changing the water in animal bowls and emptying paddling pools when they are not in use.
