ATP Rome, Alcaraz triumphs: Sinner's dream shattered in the final

Carlos Alcaraz confirmed his extraordinary talent by winning the Rome Masters 1000, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the ATP circuit. In a hard-fought final against the Italian Jannik Sinner , Alcaraz showed a solid and determined performance, closing the match in two sets with a score of 7-6, 6-1. For Sinner, however, the dream of winning the Roman title and taking a further step towards consecration in world tennis was unfortunately shattered, leaving room for a mix of bitterness and motivation for the future.

Carlos Alcaraz wins the Internazionali d'Italia for the first time, beating Jannik Sinner 7-6, 6-1 in one hour and 43 minutes. After a balanced first set decided in the tiebreak, Alcaraz dominates the second taking advantage of Sinner's physical decline. Despite the defeat, the Italian signs a great tournament, returning to the final in Rome after 47 years and three months of stoppage. For Alcaraz it is the 19th ATP title and the third of the season.

ATP Rome, Alcaraz wins in two sets over Sinner: the first statements of the protagonists

“Before the tournament I would have signed for the final. Congratulations to Carlos and his team: you are definitely to be beaten in Paris . I thank my team, we have spent three months that were anything but easy. Being here is already a great result: we have trained a lot, but the tournament is different. We bring home a very special prize, but I would have liked the other one .”

Sinner said that Rome is the most special tournament for him and for the Italians, stressing that it was a great success: Paolini won both the singles and doubles, while he and Lorenzo Musetti did theirs in the men's, highlighting that they are part of a great group.

“A special thanks to my brother : rather than being here he is in Imola to watch Formula 1. Lastly thanks to all the fans: you gave me so much energy and courage to be here on the field. It was a good test for me, now we will see the next tournaments”.

During the award ceremony, Alcaraz addressed Sinner, acknowledging how difficult it was for him and his family to face the three-month stop . He emphasized that returning to the circuit right in Rome, in such a special tournament, and playing at that level was truly remarkable. He then wanted to compliment Sinner, calling what he did incredible, and reiterated several times what an extraordinary person and athlete he is, who works hard every day and makes everyone present happy.

Giovanni Malagò , president of CONI, commented on the result at the end of the final as follows:

“Apart from this final, it couldn’t have gone better, it’s just a postponed appointment with history. The Italians were fantastic, Jasmine Paolini was wonderful as was the women’s doubles. And Sinner was fantastic anyway. In life, you can’t always win .”
