Reflection - Ferragosto: Between Celebrations and Forgotten Silences - - Varese News

We received and are publishing this reflection from Luca.
Today is Ferragosto. For many, this word means lavishly laid tables, laughter with friends, trips to the beach or the mountains, a moment of respite that marks the heart of summer. Cities empty, the streets remain silent, and the desire to be together becomes the common thread of the day.
But behind this lively image lies another, quieter and often invisible reality. It's the reality of those who will spend Ferragosto at home, not by choice, but by necessity. Elderly people living alone, people with disabilities, chronically ill people, or those suffering from psychiatric conditions: faces and stories that will remain far from group photos and outings. Some will be left alone, others will be cared for by a family member who will forgo celebrating to provide them with assistance, companionship, and care.
In these days of intense heat, loneliness weighs even more heavily. Not only because the temperatures pose a health risk, but also because the lack of relationships is felt even more acutely when the rest of the world seems to be rejoicing elsewhere.
Ferragosto should be a day of community, not just "chosen company." It would be wonderful if, between a toast and a dip, we could find time to think about those who have no voice or the ability to move. A phone call, a quick visit, a plate left on the doorstep can become gestures of humanity more precious than any selfie.
Alongside our celebrations, let's try not to forget that true summer is also the season of inclusion. Because the warmth that truly matters isn't the sun's, but the warmth we give to others.
