China must be curbed: Canaco calls for strict tariffs on Asian goods

MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— Vicente Gutiérrez Camposeco, president of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Mexico City (Canaco CDMX), warned that the actions implemented so far to stop the entry of Asian products into the country are “insufficient,” despite the hundreds of operations carried out.

"Their invasion of the country continues," said the business leader, who proposed tougher measures against imports from China, including tariffs of up to 100%, including on cars and vehicles in general originating from that nation.

"We cannot allow this invasion to continue and for Mexico to stand idly by, watching how it affects our country's consumers and seriously damages important sectors, with the risk of more job losses," the executive stated.

Gutiérrez denounced new strategies to introduce Chinese merchandise as if it were Mexican, by replacing the origin labels with others that say "Made in Mexico."

He emphasized that formal merchants are "in favor of competition, but competition that is legal, formal, and fair. We must not allow Mexico to become a dumping ground for Chinese products that clearly harm national companies and deceive consumers with low-priced, low-quality goods."

He insisted that the operations carried out by the authorities have been insufficient, and urged them to urgently strengthen these measures.
