Penalties are being prepared for altering license plates; they seek to curb vehicle evasion.

The penalties for those who alter or manipulate license plates to evade vehicle identification are yet to be determined, following the submission of a proposed amendment to the Coahuila Penal Code.

In response to this growing practice, legislative action is seeking to toughen sanctions, according to local representative Felipe González Miranda, the initiative's sponsor.

He noted that the amount of the fines is currently being evaluated through joint efforts with the Ministry of Public Security and the State Attorney General's Office.

He indicated that it is important to strengthen the regulatory framework for security reasons, as vehicle identification allows for timely action when someone commits a crime, as it is detected through video surveillance systems.

"This was the case with the incident that occurred a few days ago in Gómez Palacio. Through video surveillance, the perpetrators were identified with all the necessary intelligence, and they were captured," he emphasized.

However, whether due to criminal behavior or a mistaken belief that photo tickets are issued through security arches and video surveillance systems, some people apply sprays that practically burn the film to make license plate identification difficult.

"In Coahuila, there are no photo tickets; they don't exist; license plates are used to identify the drivers of vehicles, and it's important that they aren't altered or damaged, as they ultimately endanger property," said the local representative.

González Miranda indicated that security is a priority issue in the state, and for that reason, initiatives are being worked on to strengthen it, in line with the state government's strategy, which, he said, has yielded tangible results.

In this regard, he considered that the reforms to the state's Public Security Law, introduced more than two months ago, are bearing fruit, as to date, virtually all of Coahuila's municipalities have been integrated into the single command coordination structure.

"We couldn't be at the mercy of whether a municipality wanted to sign the agreement or not, which is why Congress made the reform so that everyone would be integrated into the coordination," he said.
