Sources Reveal If Britney Spears Is Actually Planning a 2025 MTV VMAs Performance

THE RUNDOWN
- Rumors have been circulating online that Britney Spears would perform at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
- A source has since debunked the speculation.
- This would’ve marked Spears’s first VMA appearance in nearly a decade.
Britney Spears won’t be making an award show comeback performance anytime soon.
After rumors circulated online that Spears would hit the stage at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, possibly bringing her son Jayden along, multiple sources told TMZ that there is no truth to the speculation. She was “never approached by the award show to perform, was never on the performers’ list, and there are no plans in motion behind the scenes,” the outlet wrote.
Still, Spears’s influence may well be felt at the ceremony. At last year’s VMAs, artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Tate McRae were in Spears-inspired looks. Megan famously wore a python around her neck—a clear nod to Spears’s iconic 2001 performance of “I’m a Slave 4 U.”
McRae, meanwhile, also paid homage to Spears’s 2001 VMA appearance by wearing a sheer lace Roberto Cavalli dress nearly identical to Spears’s red carpet outfit.
Had Spears performed at the 2025 ceremony, it would have marked her first VMA appearance in nearly a decade. She last attended in 2016, when she took the stage alongside G-Eazy for their collaboration “Make Me...,” from her ninth studio album, Glory.
The MTV Video Music Awards will air on Sept. 7, 2025.
