Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects the central nervous system. As the deterioration impacts the body and mind, a series of signs emerge that allow us to identify the stage of the disease and determine the most appropriate treatments. What are the 5 stages of the disease?

According to the Parkinson's Foundation, there are five milestones that determine and describe the progression of the disease and its impact on the patient's mobility and independence.

Stage 1: “Mild symptoms affecting only one side of the body. Symptoms may include mild tremor, stiffness, and subtle changes in posture or facial expression, but the person can carry out daily activities normally.”

Stage 2: “Symptoms worsen and affect both sides of the body. Difficulty with gait and posture develops, although the person may still live independently. Stiffness and tremors may become more noticeable.”

Stage 3: "This is the intermediate stage, with loss of balance, slowness of movement, and increased difficulty performing everyday tasks. Falls are more frequent, although the person remains largely independent."

Stage 4: The symptoms are severe and severely limit mobility. The patient can stand or walk with assistance (such as a walker), but requires assistance with daily activities and is generally unable to live alone. Cognitive impairments and dyskinesias also occur.”

Stage 5: “This is the most advanced stage. The patient becomes completely rigid and incapable of walking or standing, requiring 24-hour care. The patient may be bedridden, require a wheelchair, and present with symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and dementia.”
