The BEST terminal, or how to make Barcelona an international benchmark

Upon arriving in Barcelona by plane, just before landing at El Prat Airport, many people curiously look out the left window at the large container facility resembling a giant Tetris game at the rear of the Port of Barcelona. Now, we all have the opportunity to discover it. The BEST terminal is a landmark terminal that handles millions of containers annually, having a significant impact on our daily lives. In a globalized world, where international trade is a key element of our economy, this terminal keeps our industry moving and allows most of the objects we use in our daily lives to reach us. However, it is little known by the public, who benefit from its existence.
The Hutchison Ports BEST terminal was designed in Barcelona between early 2006 and commissioned in September 2012. The team combined local experience in port management with the knowledge of the international Hutchison Ports Group, the world's largest container terminal group. Since its inauguration, it has been considered one of the most technologically advanced in the sector. Automation was a key element: large robots control all container warehouse operations, managed by digital systems that optimize each logistical phase. This has significantly improved the precision and agility of operations.
Expansion and challengesIn 2025, BEST completed a major expansion that increases its capacity by 25%. The addition of seven new blocks will allow for continued growth and better service to the large container ships operating in the Mediterranean. The expansion will be publicly presented on July 10. To operate vessels the size of four football fields, BEST had to face an unprecedented structural challenge. The proximity to Barcelona Airport required limiting the height of its equipment. The technical team managed to develop low-profile cranes that were twice the size of existing ones, compatible with air traffic. Today, 13 of these cranes operate daily at the terminal, and two more are under construction.

JUANJO MARTINEZJorge Moreno, current commercial director and member of the project's driving team, explains: "After overcoming all the technological challenges, BEST has not only become a reality, but has also surpassed usual production standards, positioning itself as one of the fastest and most efficient terminals in the world." In a world where more than 90% of global trade is transported by sea, according to UNCTAD, the container is a key player. Of the more than 11 billion tons moved annually in our seas, a large portion travels in containers, and the Mediterranean Sea handles 20% of that traffic.
Real sustainabilityIn this context, and despite the fact that maritime transport is the least polluting per ton and kilometer traveled, sustainability has become an obligation. Hutchison Ports BEST has adopted a firm environmental commitment since its inception.
By electrifying its equipment, using 100% renewable energy, installing solar panels, and improving operational efficiency, BEST has become a benchmark in sustainability. Jorge Moreno explains that "currently, each container that passes through the terminal saves 67% in emissions compared to a conventional terminal. And practically 8 out of 10 movements are completely emission-free." BEST's decarbonization plan aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. Furthermore, for the past year, BEST has been the first terminal in the Mediterranean and the second in Europe to implement an OPS (Onshore Power Supply) system, which allows ships' combustion engines to be switched off and connected to the port's electrical grid. Although exact figures are not yet available, its environmental impact is undeniable and has sparked strong interest among shipping companies.
A LOOK TO THE FUTURE With its commitment to cutting-edge technology and environmental stewardship, Hutchison Ports BEST is not only transforming port logistics from Barcelona, but is also paving the way toward a more efficient, sustainable, and connected model. This port terminal is demonstrating that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand to create a positive impact on the economy and the environment. Jorge Moreno concludes that “at Hutchison Ports BEST, the future of logistics is already here. And it's a future that promises to be cleaner, more efficient, and the best is yet to come.”MORE INFORMATION
