Food plays a very important role in our health, as it can help us have a better lifestyle and prevent diseases. There are many tools that can help us improve it. Here we show you how the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) mentions that we can measure our portions.
How are food portions measured?The recommended portions are different depending on the food, here is a list.
Foods of animal origin
- Fish fillets, flattened chicken breast or steaks: one serving is about the size of the palm of your hand.
- Chicken pieces: one serving corresponds to a small piece without skin.
- Cold cuts: one serving corresponds to two thin slices of ham or turkey breast.
- Egg: one serving corresponds to one or two egg whites.
- Milk and yogurt: one serving corresponds to one cup.
Cereals
- Rice, cereal and pasta: one serving is half a measuring cup.
- Boxed bread and tortillas: one serving corresponds to one piece.
- Bolillo: one portion corresponds to half a piece.
- Plain cookies: one serving corresponds to 5 pieces.
Fruits and vegetables
- Fruits: one serving corresponds to the size of your fist.
- Vegetables: One serving is one cup raw and half a cup cooked.
Legumes
- Beans, chickpeas, lentils: one serving is half a cup.
Fats
- Seeds or plant fruits: it is recommended to add them as accompaniments to your meals and the portion should not exceed a fist.
The portions you should eat at any given time depend on whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. You can consult a nutritionist if necessary.
