Hypotheses about whether Feijóo will call the PP congress spark internal debate

The speculation about whether Alberto Núñez Feijóo will soon convene a Popular Party congress reached all of the party's leaders yesterday, with a lively exchange of opinions and a search for reliable information that has been neither confirmed nor denied from the party's headquarters on Génova Street.
"It can't be ruled out," "we're on tenterhooks," "it's a good time to relaunch the party and make a profound change," and "there's nothing to be gained by holding a congress now when Pedro Sánchez is in a slump," were some of the many comments from Popular Party leaders after Okdiario published on Thursday that Feijóo plans to call the conclave in July.
The Popular Party held its last congress in 2022, an extraordinary conclave to elect Alberto Núñez Feijóo. Therefore, calling an ordinary congress focused on the renewal of its structures and, above all, ideological rearmament has been on the table, with its pros and cons. On the one hand, and as some leaders commented yesterday, it would mean opening a complex mess, especially internally, at a time of difficulties for Pedro Sánchez. This is the line followed so far: avoiding internal focus and focusing the entire strategy on criticizing the PSOE.
But there are also staunch advocates of taking a step forward to address the major strategic issues the PP wants to address in the run-up to a future election, with the impetus this should bring: a renewal of the structure with the incorporation of new faces and even a revamp of the way it operates. Along these lines, some leaders pointed out that it is necessary for parties to hold their congresses. Following this theory, the congress would be held roughly two years before the general elections and would serve to focus the remainder of the legislative term.

At the official level, the leadership in Genoa remained silent yesterday, fueling intrigue over the executive committee that Feijóo will chair next Monday. This committee must address some organizational changes following the appointment of Dolors Montserrat as secretary general of the EPP and the role of Esteban González Pons. But holding a congress is another matter entirely.
