WhatsApp will stop working on several cell phones starting September 1.

As happens every month, starting September 1, 2025 , thousands of devices around the world will no longer be able to install the latest update to WhatsApp , the most widely used messaging app. This will affect devices from Samsung, Apple, Motorola, LG, Huawei, Sony, and HTC , many of which have been on the market for several years and do not meet the minimum update requirements.
Phones that can't install the new version won't immediately lose the app; this won't affect your account ; you can continue using it without any issues. Users will still be able to send and receive messages, photos, or audio files , but won't be able to access the app's recent features.
Over time, this lack of updates can lead to problems: security flaws, malfunctions, and even the inability to open the app if it becomes obsolete compared to newer versions. In short, the app will continue to function, but in a limited way and with greater exposure to digital risks .
According to WhatsApp , the affected models are:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Core and Galaxy Trend.
- Apple (iPhone): iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, and SE (1st generation).
- Motorola: Moto G (1st generation), Droid Razr HD, and Moto E (1st generation).
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini and L90.
- Huawei: Ascend D2.
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T and Xperia V.
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500 and Desire 601.
These are mostly devices released more than ten years ago, without official support from their manufacturers and limited to older versions of Android or iOS.
Each WhatsApp update incorporates more advanced features that require greater hardware capabilities and recent operating system versions. Older phones don't meet these requirements and are no longer compatible.
As a minimum requirement, WhatsApp requires:
- Android: version 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher.
- iOS: Version 12 or later.
The company also prioritizes security, ensuring that active users have a high level of protection against cyberattacks, scams, or vulnerabilities.
If your phone is on the list, you'll be able to continue using WhatsApp in its current state, but without new features. Over time, the service may stop working completely.
The only way to stay up-to-date is to upgrade to a device compatible with recent versions of Android or iOS, ensuring better performance, new features, and increased security.
