Climate change is a major global concern . A recent report prepared by WaterAid, in collaboration with the Universities of Bristol and Cardiff, revealed the situation of several cities around the world and how they will suffer the consequences of drought and flooding. Will Colombia experience extreme climates?
“Of the cities facing ‘climate risk change,’ approximately 13 percent are shifting toward more extreme wet weather , while the remaining 7 percent are shifting toward more extreme dry weather,” the study said.
And he adds that " these changes affect more than 250 million people worldwide, in cities like Kano in Nigeria, Bogotá in Colombia, and Cairo in Egypt, significantly limiting access to safe, clean water."
“Places that were historically wet are becoming dry, and vice versa. Other places are increasingly affected by extreme floods and droughts . A deeper understanding of localized climate risks can facilitate smarter, more personalized planning in large cities,” the analysis concludes, mentioning what is happening in the nation's capital and how it will continue to play out. Flooding on the North Highway in Bogotá
Mauricio Moreno - EL TIEMPO
The city faces a severe crisis of access to safe, potable water, exacerbated by multiple structural and climatic factors. This is because 70% of the city's water comes from the Chuza and San Rafael reservoirs (Chingaza System) , which reached historically low levels in 2024 (16% in April and 45% in September). These situations are partly due to prolonged droughts caused by the El Niño phenomenon and recent climate changes that also generate severe flooding.
For this reason, Bogotá had to implement rotating 24-hour water cuts and fines for exceeding consumption quotas. Finding alternative, nature-based solutions to end this precarious access to safe water is also on the agenda.

What other cities will be affected by climate change?Africa and Asia are most at risk: Cities most vulnerable to extreme climate change are concentrated in South and Southeast Asia, and North and East Africa. Prominent examples include: ▪️Khartoum (Sudan) ▪️Faisalabad and Lahore (Pakistan) ▪️Baghdad (Iraq) ▪️Surabaya (Indonesia) ▪️Nairobi (Kenya) ▪️Addis Ababa (Ethiopia).
Europe at risk of drought:
All the European cities analyzed, including Madrid, Paris, and London, have shown drought trends over the past 42 years, which could lead to more frequent and prolonged droughts. Furthermore, cities like Barcelona, Berlin, and Paris are at greater risk than those in North America and Australia due to the accumulation of waste and poor water system maintenance.Portafolio
