The coalition of PVV, VVD, NSC and BBB has given the Netherlands a 'year of stagnation', Frans Timmermans accuses the former coalition partners. The party leader of GroenLinks-PvdA calls on the VVD in particular to take a stand and declare that the liberals will not govern with the PVV again. The VVD must 'clearly declare' that it is 'not in the national interest' to govern with a party that causes 'paralysis and quarrels'.

Timmermans: 'The PVV's business model is always the same: you promise people the world will abolish the deductible in healthcare, the Zuiderland hospital will remain open, rents will be frozen. Nothing works and then someone gets the blame, and that is usually someone who is Muslim or comes from abroad'.

GroenLinks-PvdA wants elections and a new cabinet as soon as possible. Until then, the opposition party is in principle prepared to support the caretaker cabinet when it comes to defense policy and international issues.

10:38 am | Wilders: coalition had excuses not to sign

The PVV has broken with the coalition because the VVD, NSC and BBB did not want to support its proposals for a more far-reaching asylum policy, party leader Geert Wilders stated in the parliamentary debate on Wednesday. 'The Netherlands is crying out for a tougher asylum policy. But the coalition partners refused to sign, and they had 100,000 excuses for that,' he said, referring to other EU countries where measures are also being taken. 'I would have preferred to continue with this cabinet, but there are limits.'

10:30 am | Schoof: delay is the last thing the country needs

Outgoing Prime Minister Dick Schoof asks the Lower House to cooperate on policy proposals, despite the fall of the cabinet, which are necessary to help the country move forward. 'The last thing we need is a postponement, although that will be unavoidable in some areas', Schoof said in his introduction to the House debate on Wednesday morning.

King Willem-Alexander asked Schoof yesterday to continue working in a caretaker capacity. This is customary after a cabinet collapse, but Schoof said he saw the request as 'a personal assignment'. He 'hopes to be able to work with the House on tasks that cannot wait'. As examples, he mentioned decisions on national and international security and on the response to the looming trade war.

10:22 am | Yesilgöz does not want to rule out PVV yet

For the VVD, it is too early to rule out a future government participation of the PVV. Party leader Dilan Yesilgöz said this on Wednesday before the start of the parliamentary debate on the fall of the cabinet. 'I am very disappointed. Wilders has walked out again,' she said.

Yesilgöz referred to 2012, when the PVV leader had left a tolerated construction that her party was also part of. 'But I really have to go through the emotions and weigh it up properly.' Her predecessor as party leader, Mark Rutte, did not want to do business with Wilders after the fall of his first cabinet.

Before the debate, outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Eddy van Hijum of NSC stated that it was clear to him: 'The collaboration has not been a success. This cannot be repeated.'

10:20 am | Caretaker Prime Minister Schoof makes statement about end of cabinet

It is the day after the fall of the Schoof cabinet because PVV leader Geert Wilders resigned from the coalition with VVD, NSC and BBB. At 10:25, caretaker Prime Minister Dick Schoof is expected in the House of Representatives. He will then make a short statement about the fall of his cabinet.

The party leaders will then debate with Schoof and, above all, with each other in the House of Representatives. About what happened and about the question of how to proceed. The VVD, NSC and BBB would like to continue with their policies in some policy areas. To do so, they need a majority in the House of Representatives. Is that already emerging today?

It is not yet known when the elections will be, but with the fall of the cabinet, The Hague is switching to campaign mode: the battle for the voters' favor has begun. That will also be noticeable in the debate, for which the House has set aside the entire day today.
