Belgian bank KBC is investigating a possible takeover of ABN AMRO.

Anonymous sources told Bloomberg news agency that this was the case.

Brussels-based KBC is reportedly in the early stages of studying the deal and its feasibility. The sources Bloomberg spoke with requested anonymity.

An ABN Amro spokesperson could not comment on the news. "We don't comment on market rumors," he told RTL Z.

Consultation

Discussions are still ongoing within KBC about the value of a potential acquisition. According to some sources, it's also questionable whether a deal will actually be reached.

Moreover, there could be more interested parties. Bloomberg previously reported that BNP Paribas and Deutsche Bank, among others, have considered the Dutch bank.

The Dutch government is a shareholder in ABN AMRO; the bank was nationalized in 2008 during the banking crisis. Recently, a number of shares were sold.
