A New Invasive Species of Tick Has Appeared. Scientists Confirm Discovery

Haemaphysalis longicornis was discovered by researchers from Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University. They described their findings in the journal Experimental and Applied Acarology. They warned that we are dealing with an invasive species, capable of transmitting potentially dangerous diseases.

Co-author of the study Adem Keskin emphasized that the new species was first encountered in 2023. A resident of Istanbul noticed the creature on his body and gave it to scientists for analysis. As experts said, Haemaphysalis longicornis is an invasive species, originating from China.

– We believe that this species of tick has already established itself in Turkey – Keskin emphasized. His group began monitoring the presence of the tick in the country. They also observed the development of the arachnid from larva to adult females. The species was supposed to reproduce and spread locally.

In the Daily Sabah, Adem Keskin warned of the potentially dangerous consequences of the new tick spreading more widely. “Haemaphysalis longicornis is known to have a high potential and is associated with more than 30 pathogens,” he said, referring to its potential to spread pathogens.

– It is common in China and Australia, and after 2017 it reached the United States, leading to serious animal health problems. Now, for the first time, it has been documented in Turkey – said Dr. Kandai Doi, who works with Keskin.

Haemaphysalis longicornis, also known as the longhorned tick, is a parasitic arachnid from East Asia, known for its rapid reproduction through parthenogenesis. It settles mainly on animals, but also threatens humans, transmitting Lyme disease and spotted fever, among others.
