On Sunday, a World War II mortar shell was found on the beach in Łukęcin (Dziwnów commune). The area around the unexploded object has been secured, and sappers are expected to arrive on Monday morning, the police from Kamień Pomorski told PAP.

An unexploded device found on Sunday around noon on a Baltic Sea beach in Łukęcin is being secured by police.

"It's a mortar shell from World War II. On Monday, sappers will come to collect it," junior asp. Katarzyna Jasion, press officer of the District Police Headquarters in Kamień Pomorski, told PAP.

The policewoman stressed that there was no threat to beachgoers. She explained that a section of the beach had been cordoned off and officers were still on site. She added that a sapper patrol was expected on Monday morning. The charge was to be taken to a training ground or detonated on site.

The unexploded device was found using a metal detector during a weekend beach clean-up organized by the Łukęcin Village. "We are cooperating with the mayor of Łukęcin and at her request we gathered about 30 people with detectors to search the sand for cans, bottle caps and other dangerous rubbish," Jacek Ukowski, president of the Exploration Association for the Saving of Monuments of St. Cordula in Kamień Pomorski, told PAP.

"A 120 mm mortar shell was found about two meters from the shoreline. At a depth of only 10 centimeters. It was embedded almost vertically," Ukowski said.

He emphasized that the detectorists secured the area with tape, fenced off about 100 meters above the seashore and immediately (at about 1 p.m.) called the police. Łukowski reported that the unexploded device was located between the first and second entrance to the beach in Łukęcin.

The Association of St. Cordula, as well as the Templum Association operating in the West Pomeranian and Lubuskie Voivodeships, participated in the beach cleaning.
