Neighborhood playgrounds are designed to be friendly to both young users and their caregivers. Their design currently prioritizes safety and aesthetics, creating colorful spaces filled with equipment where children can unleash their energy. However, Przemyśl still boasts playgrounds that have long since seen their best. These facilities have been in place practically since the beginning, and despite maintenance, they differ visually and technically from those currently installed in neighborhoods.
[middle1]According to one of the residents, who is a member of the PSM in Przemyśl, the playground in the Kazanów housing estate, next to the building at Paderewskiego 14, should have been modernized long ago.
"I consider what's been happening here recently to be a misunderstanding," says Danuta Zubrzycka, who also decided to bring the matter to the attention of Anna Karczewska, president of the Jarosław branch of the Society of Friends of Children, who also serves as the children's rights advocate at that institution. She also contacted our editorial team.
Has anyone thought about the users of this place?"Children are returning home after playing on the playground covered in sand, and mothers have trouble getting their strollers onto it. It was turned into one giant sandbox after work nearby was completed. About four dump truckloads of sand were dumped onto the playground. Furthermore, the facility has been closed since June 10th due to the work. Only a notice was left, and the children couldn't even get to the toys left in the sandbox," reports D. Zubrzycka.
In her opinion, this place has long since passed its prime, and it's time to consider replacing the worn-out equipment with new ones, sowing grass on the playground or installing a safe, shock-absorbing surface, and planting trees and shrubs to provide shade. "The current shrubs are prickly and unsuitable for a playground. And greenery is needed here, if only because there's a parking lot nearby, so it would absorb exhaust fumes. Children have the right to play in decent conditions," says a resident of the estate.
Replacing the surface costsThe authorities of the Przemyśl Housing Cooperative, whom we contacted, acknowledge the arguments, but also put forward their own.
"Yes, the playground was temporarily closed due to ongoing heating network repairs, which involved excavation and pipe replacement. The fault simply had to be repaired. We couldn't allow anything to threaten the children's safety. Another playground could have been used during this time. We didn't warn them in advance that the playground would be temporarily closed, as it's difficult to predict a fault," says Zbigniew Kurosz, president of PSM.
"Regarding the playground itself, I'm not saying it's modern, but anything modern requires money. The cooperative members decide how the funds are spent. I haven't heard anyone say we shouldn't insulate the building because we need to build a playground. We have a certain amount of funds, and we have to decide what we want to spend them on..."
