The Polish Charge d'affaires at the German embassy visited the regional parliament in Brandenburg. During his speech, Jan Tombiński referred to the Polish-German dispute over migrants. The diplomat stated that Germany must prove that the asylum seekers being returned actually came from Poland. He added that Poland sees no point in restoring control on the internal borders of the European Union.

The words of the head of the Polish diplomatic mission in Berlin are a direct response to the events in the Guben area. German police officers found two young men from Afghanistan about a kilometer from the Lusatian Neisse who wanted to apply for asylum in Germany. The services wanted to return the 20-year-old and the 23-year-old to Poland, to which our authorities did not agree, citing the Dublin procedure.

Jan Tombiński's statement has been widely reported in the German media. According to "Die Welt", this is the first blow to the migration policy of the new German government and the new Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt. This is an obvious dispute between Germany and a neighboring EU country, the journalists said.

In turn, the Der Westen portal drew attention to the fact that Poland has long signaled its resistance to the issue of returning migrants and now these doubts are only being implemented. Alexander Dobrindt, the head of the German Interior Ministry, has collided with a granite wall - it was written.

The German weekly drew attention to the fact that Alexander Dobrindt, referring to the incident in Guben, stated that there was indeed a discussion about competences, but the federal police resolved the matter very sensibly by deciding to accept these two people. The minister had just emphasized that insufficient cooperation with neighboring countries, especially in situations requiring the return of migrants, is a big problem. In this context, he mentioned not only Poland, but also Austria.

Is the agreement the basis for returning migrants to Poland?

The daily "Bild" stated in its report that "German authorities and border guards are certain that Poland must accept the migrants back". According to journalists, an internal document is circulating among both services and politicians, in which the authorities explain why Poland is obliged to accept them.

The letter was supposed to mention the Polish-German agreement on cooperation between the police, border and customs services, which was concluded on 15 May 2014. The document includes a provision that in the event of temporary reintroduction of border controls on the common border, German law will be applied on German territory, from which it was concluded that the authorities should refuse entry to asylum seekers arriving from a safe third country.
