US President Donald Trump has suggested he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday to sign a deal on minerals. He has also spoken of buying Russian resources.

"I heard he's coming on Friday, I certainly wouldn't mind if he wanted to sign it with me," Trump told reporters during an Oval Office signing ceremony, responding to questions about Zelensky's visit to sign a partnership agreement on the extraction of Ukrainian natural resources.

Trump announced on Monday that such a meeting would take place. However, it was not yet known when the Ukrainian president would fly overseas.

"I think the American people are very happy because, as you know, Biden has been throwing money around like cotton candy. And this is a very big deal. This could be a trillion-dollar deal," he added.

Trump said that America wants to get back the money spent on supporting Ukraine. He again stated - contrary to the facts - that America spent $350 billion on this purpose, while Europe spent $100 billion, all of which in the form of loans.

In reality – as French President Emmanuel Macron corrected him on Monday – Europe spent more in total than the United States ($140 billion compared to $114 billion from the US – ed.), and both the US and the EU granted loans to Ukraine repaid with profits from Russian assets.

The US President also stated that he would also like to obtain "minerals from Russian soil" , a possibility that the Kremlin reportedly recently signaled.

"They have very valuable land that is not being used, so something like this could happen," he said.

Responding to a question about the Kremlin's lack of consent to the participation of European forces in Ukraine , the US president repeated that he had "heard something different" and that the Russians had assured him that they had no problem with it.

- But we will need some form of peacekeeping force. Something has to be done that satisfies everyone - Trump said. He stated that the security and military support of Ukraine will be primarily the responsibility of European countries, and when asked whether America would also participate in this, he replied that it is being negotiated.

Responding to a question about whether he intends to reduce the number of American troops in Europe, Trump said America will remain engaged on the continent , although he listed his grievances with the European Union and NATO.

The British Financial Times reported on Tuesday that Ukraine agreed to the American deal after Washington dropped its most stringent demands, including the right to $500 billion in potential revenue from the exploitation of these mineral resources.

The new text is supposed to say that the money will be used for investments in Ukraine. It is also supposed to be only a preliminary agreement, the more detailed terms of which will be negotiated as part of a subsequent agreement.
