David Lynch Was Working on a Script Before His Death, Family Hesitates to Release It

David Lynch, the creator of Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, died on January 15. Shortly after, the Netflix boss revealed that the filmmaker was working on a script for a miniseries before his death. The director's daughter has now revealed that she would like to share his final project with fans. "It would be very sad if people didn't get to see it," Jennifer Lynch noted.
In mid-January, moviegoers from all over the world were plunged into mourning - David Lynch , one of the most original and most respected contemporary directors, creator of such cult productions as "Blue Velvet", "Mulholland Drive" and "Twin Peaks" , passed away. The autopsy of the legendary filmmaker showed that he died of cardiac arrest, the cause of which was complications related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease . The death certificate included information that Lynch's body was cremated.
Last August, the Honorary Oscar-winning director revealed that he was struggling with emphysema due to years of smoking.
"I can't leave the house. I can only walk a short distance before I run out of air. I have to be careful, especially now, with the risk of catching Covid. If I got sick, it would be very dangerous for me," Lynch said at the time.
The famous artist died just before his 79th birthday. The burial took place on January 22 at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
David Lynch's Last ScreenplayA few days after the cinema visionary's passing, Netflix executive Ted Sarandos spoke about his latest project. The streaming giant's CEO revealed that Lynch intended to make a limited series for the platform with the working title "Unrecorded Night" , for which he was writing the script before his death.
"It was a project full of secrets and risk, but we wanted to go on this creative journey with a genius. The pandemic and David's health issues meant that production never happened, but we made it clear to him that as soon as he was ready, we were on board," Sarandos revealed.
Meanwhile, the late filmmaker's daughter, Jennifer Lynch, has spoken out on the matter. In an interview with The Times, she said she and her relatives are considering publishing her father's last script.
- None of us tried to make his series for him. We're thinking more about publishing the script in book form, so that people could sit down and read his ideas. It would be very sad if people didn't have the opportunity to see it - emphasized the director's offspring.
She added that although Lynch had not officially finalized the cast, he intended to hire his longtime collaborators.
"I swore him to secrecy, but yes, I'm sure Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern and Naomi Watts would have been involved. He loved working with his friends," the filmmaker's daughter revealed.
After the director's death, Watts spoke to the Los Angeles Times about their last meeting, which took place in November last year.
"You could see he wasn't feeling well, but he was in a great mood. He wanted to get back to work. He still had a creative spirit. I was sure we'd see each other again in a few weeks," the "Mulholland Drive" star revealed at the time.
