• The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) covers medical rehabilitation at centers across Poland. We've checked which ones cooperate with ZUS.

The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) can finance treatment in sanatoriums and rehabilitation centers as part of its so-called disability prevention program. This support is available to individuals at risk of losing their ability to work, provided there is a realistic chance of regaining their ability through rehabilitation.

To benefit from the program and go to a sanatorium at the Institute's expense, you must also meet one of the following conditions:

• be insured with ZUS on account of professional activity,
• receive sickness benefit or rehabilitation benefit,
• receive a periodic pension for incapacity for work.

You can also benefit from medical rehabilitation financed by ZUS if:

• when checking the sick leave on which the person is currently staying, the medical examiner will determine such a need,
• a person applies for rehabilitation benefits or a disability pension.

The application for medical rehabilitation under the ZUS disability pension prevention program (PR-4 application) must be completed by the patient's physician. Any licensed physician can complete the application. It does not need to be submitted in person; the physician will submit it electronically (e-ZLA) via the ZUS Electronic Services Platform.

Qualification for the program is determined by a ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) physician. Patients must bring their treatment documentation with them to the examination. If the physician issues a decision regarding the need for rehabilitation, the patient will receive a referral notice by mail with information about the date and location of the rehabilitation.

Each rehabilitation stay lasts 24 days and is free for patients. The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) covers the costs of treatment, accommodations, and meals.

What is also important is that you do not have to use your vacation leave to benefit from rehabilitation, because the doctor issues a sick leave certificate for the entire period of your stay in the sanatorium.

From the rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal system to neurological and oncological diseases

Inpatient rehabilitation (sanatoriums) covers patients:

• with musculoskeletal problems,
• with circulatory system problems,
• with respiratory problems,
• with psychosomatic illnesses,
• with oncological diseases,
• with neurological diseases,
• with diseases of the vocal organ.

Outpatient care covers similar conditions but requires daily travel to treatments at designated times.

As part of rehabilitation, patients are provided with:

• individual treatment plan including physiotherapy (kinesiotherapy, physical therapy, massages),
• psychological support (individual therapy, psychoeducation, relaxation training)
• health education on proper nutrition, prevention of lifestyle diseases and addictions, as well as basic knowledge about diseases and hazards in the workplace.

ZUS does not have its own sanatoriums, so it collaborates with rehabilitation facilities across Poland. These are often located in attractive spa towns.
