Will there be as many as 6 new days off from work? It all depends on the president's decision
May Day with a bang, All Souls' Day with a breather, and New Year's Eve relaxed? It's possible. The Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland has just received petitions that could change our work schedule — and our rest schedule. But are we really going to have more free time?
Corpus Christi is just around the corner – a holiday beloved by fans of long weekends. Traditionally, it falls on Thursday, which provokes a "combined" holiday on Friday. Many employees and students take time off then, unofficially extending their rest time. Now there is a chance that this custom may become official.
The Chancellery of the President has received two petitions, the author of which postulates to add as many as six additional days to the list of non-working holidays . Among them is the Friday after Corpus Christi, but also Maundy Thursday and Friday, May 2, November 2 and December 31. The argument? Since schools and public transport are already operating in "holiday mode" then, why not all of us?
6 new days off from work?The petition is not limited to specific dates. Its author also proposes that in the event of a National or Local Government Day of Mourning, that day automatically becomes a day off from work. Although this sounds logical, the legislative reality is not that fast.
According to the fakt.pl portal, according to the procedure, the president can take legislative initiative, but he does not have to. More often, he sends petitions further - to the appropriate ministries. What is more, due to the upcoming change of the head of state, the matter may only reach the desk of Karol Nawrocki, who will take office on August 6.
So will we spend New Year's Eve this year without stressing about work? Will All Souls' Day become a moment for reflection, and not another day in the rush? It's all in the hands of decision-makers. But one thing is certain - the topic has gained a second life. And we, Poles, like no one else, can appreciate a well-planned long weekend.
