The fourth in the world ranking, Fritz, had a "bye" in the first round, but later won over French player Quentin Halys 6:4, 7:6 (7-5).

The Pole had previously played against his peer from the USA five times and had managed to beat him only once, six years ago in Montreal.

Their Thursday match started with a significant delay due to the rain that has been torpedoing the competition in Geneva for several days. Eventually, the players managed to get on the court, but they had to be careful because it was slippery, as Fritz learned when he fell in the first set.

The Wrocław player had problems in the first service game and had to defend no-points, but in the end he managed to keep his serve. The next games, both for Hurkacz and Fritz, were equally even. The lower-ranked tennis player was the first to record a break, after which he took the lead 4:1. One break was enough for him to win the first set 6:3.

The second set was again an even fight, both players were winning games quite confidently with their serve and neither of them was able to break their opponent. The winner was determined by a tie-break, which was as close as the whole match. Both players lost their serve once, but in the decisive moment Hurkacz turned out to be slightly better, sending two aces, and the victory was given to him by Fritz's hit into the net.

The Wrocław player will play in Geneva for the first final this year against Sebastian Ofner, who earlier on Thursday defeated the Russian Karen Khachanov 4:6, 6:4, 6:4. This will be Hurkacz's first duel with the one-year-old Austrian in an ATP event.

The advancement to the top four in Geneva will allow the Pole to return to the top "30" of the ATP list in the latest rating. Currently, he has advanced from 31st to 28th place in the "live" ranking.

The tournament in Switzerland is the last test for the Wrocław player before the French Open, which begins on Sunday.
